As I wrote last week, BMW revealed the new 3.0 CSL on the 22nd, and my god is it ugly. It makes me wonder what the designer was sniffing when he looked at the drawing and said, “Yep that’s my masterpiece”. The car was revealed at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este and thank god BMW said it was only a concept and wouldn’t be put into production. They did say however that they would be focusing more on building extreme lightweight models similar to those of the Mercedes Black series.
This car has a face only a mother could love, and even she’d have second thoughts. Its all angles and curves, it doesn’t know what its doing. Take the 458 for example it has a very angular face, this makes it look aggressive yet beautiful, then look at the Fiat 500 all round and curved, this makes the car cute and unmenacing. BMW have tried to combine the two and it has not worked, they’ve ended up with a car that looks like it had two different designers one for the front and one for the back, both of whom had never met the other.
Whilst it may be ugly the message is good, BMW needs a car to compete with the Black series, think about it, a M4 black edition to go against the CLK, or even go more extreme and have a Z4 Black to take on the SL. BMW make great cars, just make them greater, more drivers cars less posers cars, less comfort more driving pleasure.
