Morgan have never been a particularly modern company, its cars seem more at home in the 1940’s than on a modern racetrack. But that hasn’t stopped the small British company from taking on the world with their old timey sports cars. The latest of which, the Morgan Aero GT has just started to roll of the production line in Malvern. Designed as a celebration of the end of the Aero 8 (Morgan’s most modern car to date) the GT was revealed at the recent Geneva Motor show with a 4.8 litre V8 bringing 367BHP to the party. The Aero 8 GT is capable of going from 0-62 in just 4.5 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 170MPH.
Only eight Morgan Aero 8 GTs will be built making each model special. The Aero 8 certainly has come a long way since its cross-eyed beginnings back in 2001. The various aerodynamic upgrades such as the rear diffuser and front canards are directly aimed at improving the rather tail happy Aero 8, the Aero 8 GT also uses Morgan’s latest adjustable suspension. Each Aero GT will be built in direct contact with the customer making each car unique and a special celebration of the Aero 8’s history.
It’s sad this is the last Aero 8, whilst not exactly a world-beater the Aero 8 has always held a soft spot in my heart for being one of the last true British sports cars, its looks are straight out of a history book and could in some cases be mistaken for a kit car, but the Morgan Aero 8 is a classic example of British engineering at its best, not the best mechanically but certainly one of the few cars left that did it their own way and didn’t conform to what a sports car should look like, the Morgan Aero 8 went its own way and should be proud of that.

Ok so what do a plane, a helicopter in flight and a two wheelin’ Raptor have in common, that’s right Ken Block donuts them all in his new Gymkhana video, Gymkhana 8, to be honest I could just copy and paste my last description of Gymkhana 7 as they are both very similar. In 8 Ken drifts and donuts his way round Dubai, in his Ford Fiesta (in a rather fetching new livery) and donuts a moving Ford Raptor driving on two wheels, along with a flying helicopter and a Boeing 747.
Another part of Gymkhana 8 features Ken putting his Fiesta through its paces in a drag race against a Ferrari F12, a Lexus LFA, a Lamborghini Aventador and a Bugatti Veyron. Now there may be some filming trickery here but the little 600+ horsepower Fiesta beats the lot. The common complaint about the Gymkhana videos by internet idiots, is “oh its faked he does so many tries at it you can see the skid marks.” And yes this is true but that doesn’t make it any less of an amazing feat of driving insanity.
Also Ken teases his next Gymkhana video in which he’ll be driving a heavily modified version of the new Ford Focus RS, called the RX which quite frankly will be insane. We only see a rendering of the car for the moment but watch this space.
BMW are set to bring back the 8 Series by 2020 but don’t expect to big sporting brute we saw in the 90’s the new 8 Series has put on a bit of weight in its retirement and is aiming to take on the likes of the Mercedes S-Class coupe and the Bentley Continental GT and not to mention the Rolls Royce Wraith. The 8 Series has been put forward to BMW bosses as a two door but also a four door similar to the BMW M6 Gran Coupe.
Whilst many would love to see BMW return to the old days of creating super cars like the M1 and the 8 Series, its unlikely to happen any time soon, the only super car we’ll get anything close to is the BMW i8 and the new 8 Series is looking bigger uglier and most of all slower than the previous model. The sleek styling is hiding a luxury coupe rather than the svelte light weight sports car we all really want.
Mercedes has seen a lot of success with the new S-Class coupe. A car for those of us who want the luxury of an S-Class but also love to drive, and drive fast. Whilst BMW 7 Series sales have plummeted with BMW only shifting 36,364 compared to 125,000 S-Class models. BMW hope that the 8 series will be a new beginning for BMW, however if the 8 series is indeed launched in 2020 it will likely be going up against a new S-Class, it all feels too little too late for BMW.
