BMW Breaks drifting world record in incredible fashion

BMW have set a new world record for the longest continuous drift more than doubling the previous record. Johan Schwartz was behind the wheel of the new M5 when he set the incredible record of 232.5 miles breaking the previous record held by Harald Muller of 89.55 miles who set the record in 2014 in a Toyota GT86.

BMW M5 1

The most interesting part of this stunt is they actually set two records with a pair of M5’s setting the record for longest tandem drift at 49.25 miles. The other M5 driven by Matt Mullins wasn’t just there for the stunt, it was also used to refuel the main M5 in motion. Schwartz said: “We knew that if we were going to recapture the world record for the longest sustained drift and set the bar as high as possible, we would need to find a way to keep the M5 going without stopping to refuel. In the end, the refueling system worked flawlessly and the M5 performed as expected.  It was a big win all around.”

BMW M5 6Both M5s used modified fuelling systems on board to aid in the refuelling process but were otherwise completely standard. You have to wonder what BMW bosses thought when this stunt was proposed. And then you have to think about how big the risk assessment had to be. You always hear about these kinds of stunts and think oh its obviously faked or it’ll go wrong in someway and end in a big fireball, but not this time.

What do you think of BMW’s incredible stunt, let us know in the comments.

BMW answer back to Mercedes and Audi

BMW M2 2002

BMW have finally developed a car to take on the fantastic Mercedes A45 AMG 4Matic. Its been rumoured for a long time but finally at the Detroit Motor Show this week we got to see the M2. BMW are trying to hark back to their past comparing the M2 to the classic 2002 turbo.

The old BMW 1M was a brilliant little car but the name didn’t really work. BMW have now just updated it and then handed it back to the M division to beef it up a little bit. The M2 has a 3.0 litre turbocharged straight six with 370BHP and 343 lb-ft of torque. The M2 also has an overboost function powering up the engine with an extra 26lb-ft of torque for a brief time. This gives the M2 a 0-60 time of 4.2 seconds and a top speed limited to 155MPH, remove the limiter and its go up to 168MPH.

BMW M2 Rear

The M2 runs a price tag of £44,000, which is £4,000 more expensive than its rivals the Audi RS3 and the Mercedes A45 AMG 4Matic. But with both of them being 4 wheel drive you can expect much more tail out fun from the BMW all of these care will be great to live with so its just a matter of personal preference, I for one would go for the M2 due to its sleek coupe styling. But there are only 2000 coming to the UK so I better get a move on.

I’M Back, time for a catchup post

So regular readers of my work will notice that I’ve been away for a couple of weeks on holiday so here is my giant catch up post full of all the stuff I missed whilst I was away.

Alfa Giulia

First of all Alfa Romeo revealed their new 3 series rival the Giulia. Now the biggest problem with the Alfa saloons has always been that they just didn’t sell how often do you see 159 rolling around, never. And I don’t think it’s the age-old Alfa problem in that they’ve broken down. I just feel that compared to the rest of the Alfa range the saloons just seem boring. This is gonna happen with the Giulia as well, the business men of this world would rather buy a 3 Series or a C Class. Why have a 3 Series wannabe when you could just have a 3 Series. But there is one caveat to this Ferrari. The name amongst names and also the engine supplier for the Giulia how does a 503BHP V6 sound interesting I await more news on this hopefully great car.

Aston Vulcan

The Goodwood festival of Speed also happened whilst I was away and loads of stuff came from there, notably an all electric Morgan 3 wheeler showing they have finally joined the modern age, we also saw the Aston Martin Vulcan racing up the hill climb for the first time, the more race derived car looking fantastic in matt black and blue accents. We also saw the debut of the Lotus 3-eleven a tiny little pocket rocket with 450BHP and 900KG it truly is a fantastic little thing.

Veyron Successor

Bugatti also let slip of some details about the Veyron’s successor and as expected it’s going to be a hybrid, similar to that of McLaren Ferrari and Porsche they also mentioned to Autocar that they hope to reach the dizzying heights of 286MPH smashing the previous record of the Veyron SS. Bugatti also say the new car will have an updated version of the Veyron’s 16.4 litre W16 engine with nearly 1500BHP and I cannot wait for that.

Lamborghini LP750-4

Lamborghini are to bring out a convertible version of the Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce (they really need to think up shorter names for these things this is getting ridiculous) the roadster will have everything the hardtop does (apart from a roof) and the usual slightly slower 0-62 time and again the usual increase in price. Only 500 Aventador LP750-4 Superveloce Roadsters (see what I mean) will be made so get your orders in fast people.

Alfa SUV

In more Alfa Romeo news two new SUVs has been spotted being tested around the streets of Italy Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne mentioned the cars at the launch of the Giulia and they are expected to be released in 2016 and 2018 respectively. I think we can clearly see a connection between the Fiat 500L and these cars. Little is know about the cars in question apart from the fact that Fiat Chrysler are clearly trying to find a way to make Alfa Romeos more appealing this includes a return to the USA in the next few years.

BMW M5 2017

And finally the new M5 has been spotted testing at the Nurbergring. The new car is expected for 2017 and has a completely new front end along with a V8 under the hood although this is only going from reports from photographers and what they thought the car sounded like.

Cornish Choppers VS Cornish JDM car meet

Last weekend a group of guys from the Cornish Choppers VDUB club met with the boys from the Cornish JDM club to show off their cars to great success. Both groups met in Truro Matalan car park to celebrate their individual love of cars both Jap and German.

There were Beemers, Lupos and endless Golfs, which matched up to loads of Skylines, Civics and S14’s great fun was had by all with mutual appreciation between the two groups. There were guys pulling burnouts in Polos and Civics with smoke pouring around the car park and the smell of burning rubber filling the air. Many people are calling for it to happen again soon as everyone who went had a brilliant time and there was a great turn out with easily 200 cars filling the car park.
